Holland Snowmelt 5k
Don't let winter hold you back! The Snowmelt 5K is set to return to downtown Holland on Saturday, February 8, starting at 8 a.m. This unique race features heated streets, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. Following the 5K, a Kids' Mini Melt for ages 7 and under will begin at 9 a.m. The festivities kick off the night before, with stunning ice sculptures created by top carvers lining the streets as part of the Holland on Ice festival. Last year's event attracted around 425 participants, and this year, at least 500 are expected. All 5K runners will receive custom socks, a finisher medal, and refreshments. Registration is open at Holland Recreation with fees of $35 for the 5K and $10 for the Mini Melt. In addition to the race, attendees can enjoy live ice sculpting and special discounts from local shops throughout the weekend, making it a perfect opportunity to experience the charm of winter in Holland!
Certified Ski Patrol And Looking For Free Skiing & Lodging?
Volunteering as a guest ski patroller at the Porcupine Mountains Winter Sports Complex offers exciting perks! Located in the upper peninsula, this state-run ski hill invites certified ski patrollers to enjoy stunning views of Lake Superior while giving back. Open Friday through Monday, the Sports Complex rewards volunteers with a guest pass for a friend and lodging if needed for their weekend commitment.
To participate, patrollers must be certified through the National Ski Patrol or in training. After an orientation, they can ski the natural slopes while being on call for first aid. Since the program’s inception with the DNR’s management of the ski hill, it has attracted patrollers from across the U.P. and northern Wisconsin, providing valuable support to local patrollers and park rangers. Interested individuals can call the park headquarters at 906-885-5275 to get involved. There’s always room for more!
Local Pup In This Year’s Puppy Bowl

Muskegon County — Although the Lions will not be in the Super Bowl, Michiganders have a local hero to rally behind: Rory, a spirited rescue pup from Big Lake Humane Society, who will compete in this year's Puppy Bowl. This lively Siberian husky-American pit bull terrier mix is celebrated for his playful antics, particularly in the snow, with his foster, Bob Halberstadt, humorously noting, “He just runs you over.” Rory has been diligently training, inspired by the Lions, especially running back Montgomery, whom Halberstadt likens to Rory's bulldozer-like energy. The Puppy Bowl, airing on Animal Planet on February 9, not only showcases shelter pets but also raises awareness for animal rescue, making it a significant event for the shelter, according to Executive Director Alexis Robertson. Fans can join a watch party at the Dirty Dog starting at noon on February 9 for photos with Rory, and Halberstadt is eager to see Rory shine in the spotlight!
