THE DIGEST
WMU National Hockey Title

Western Michigan University celebrated its first-ever national hockey title with a "National Champions Rally" at University Arena, attended by approximately 3,000 fans. The event, held on April 14, followed the Broncos' 6-2 victory over Boston University. Fans lined up to purchase championship merchandise, meet players, and take photos with the trophies. WMU President Edward Montgomery praised the team's dedication and the fans' unwavering support, calling them the "Broncos' secret sauce." Coach Pat Ferschweiler, named national coach of the year, highlighted the impact of the fans during the championship game. The rally also looked forward to the future, with a new arena set to elevate the hockey and basketball programs. Athletic director Dan Bartholomae emphasized the significance of the new arena in sustaining the program's success.
Grand Haven Dredging Dispute
Grand Haven's inner harbor dredging is delayed due to a dispute between the federal government and Michigan over new PFAS pollution testing requirements. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rejected funding for PFAS testing, fearing increased dredging costs if landfilling is required. Congressional Republicans criticized Governor Whitmer, while harbor businesses worry about rising road construction costs due to potential cargo delivery disruptions. A productive meeting occurred between EGLE and the Army Corps, clarifying testing criteria. Seventeen Michigan harbors may require testing due to proximity to PFAS sources. While Grand Haven is currently the only delayed project, the possibility remains that severe PFAS contamination could threaten future dredging and harbor viability. Concerns extend to major connecting channels like the Detroit River, impacting industries reliant on shipping.
Coral Reefs Of Michigan
Michigan's vernal pools, temporary woodland ponds, are essential habitats teeming with unique creatures like fairy shrimp and blue-spotted salamanders. These "coral reefs" of Eastern forests support over 550 species and play a vital role in woodland ecosystems by recharging aquifers and recycling nutrients. The Vernal Pools Partnership and Vernal Pool Patrol are mapping and monitoring these habitats with volunteer assistance, identifying indicator species like fairy shrimp, wood frogs, and salamanders. Guided explorations are offered to educate the public, emphasizing the sensitivity of these ecosystems. A Vernal Pool Exploration event is scheduled for April 22 in Linden, with volunteer opportunities also available. A short film provides a closer look at these fleeting wetlands.
