THE DIGEST
Halloween On Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island’s Halloween Weekend will take place from October 25 to 27, featuring activities for all ages. Children can enjoy trick-or-treating at downtown shops, while adults are encouraged to wear costumes in local bars and venues, with live music and special deals available as businesses prepare to close for the season. While Mackinac Island welcomes visitors year-round, many lodging and dining options will be limited after Halloween. The event marks a celebratory finale for many local establishments and offers visitors the chance to experience the island’s vibrant fall foliage and serene atmosphere. Attendees can partake in seasonal dining with views of Lake Huron, picturesque carriage and bike tours, and explore charming downtown shops and historic landmarks. For specifics on lodging and restaurant availability, visitors should consult the tourism bureau's website here.
Muskegon Community Food Club
Leaders in Muskegon County are collaborating to establish a new food pantry, called the Community Food Club, to combat local food insecurity. This initiative aims to provide affordable fresh produce in a grocery store-like setting, addressing the needs of approximately 18,754 food-insecure residents, including one in five children. Currently, Muskegon relies heavily on mobile pantries, with food distributed primarily through this method and local agencies overwhelmed by demand.
An open house titled "The Future of Food in Muskegon" will be held on Friday, Oct. 25, at Muskegon Community College to present findings from a recent needs assessment. Organizers plan to integrate social services into the food club to address multiple issues facing the community. Areas with the greatest need include the cities of Muskegon and Muskegon Heights. Residents are encouraged to attend the event to learn more and participate in the initiative.
DNR Names New “Blueway” On Grand River

Grand Rapids, MI, has established a new blueway for kayakers, canoers, and paddle boarders along the Lower Grand River, designated as a water trail by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) last month. This 96-mile stretch of river flows from Portland to Grand Haven and includes 35 public access points, promoting safe outdoor recreation. In summer 2023, GR Outside hosted family paddle nights, attracting 300 participants in a single event and a total of 2,000 attendees for the season. The Lower Grand River is the 10th water trail in Michigan, joining the Middle and Upper Grand River trails. The Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority allocated $60,000 to the Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds for efforts related to the water trail designation. Although the DNR designation does not provide funding, it may assist in securing grants for river resources and amenities.
LOCAL BUSINESS
Salon Opens In Muskegon’s Lumberman’s Vault
Alchemy Salon by the Barber’s Daughter opened on October 21 at 221 W Webster Ave., Suite E, Muskegon, in the former Lumberman’s Bank. Owner Erin France, with nearly 20 years of styling experience, aims to educate new stylists. The salon is the first in Muskegon to carry BOB hair care and Color Space products. Currently staffed with two stylists, France plans to hire more as business grows. The building, once vacant for a decade, is part of a redevelopment project that includes various commercial tenants. Alchemy Salon is offering 20% off facials for its grand opening celebrations.
150K Raised For Saugatuck Green Space
Over $150,000 has been raised to support a plan by ODC Network to transform a 170-acre, long-unused property in Saugatuck Township, originally purchased for an airport. Previous proposals for a golf course, sports complex, and park were not realized. The current plan aims to preserve green space and enhance accessibility with features like a trail system, scenic overlook, and parking area, costing $130,000. Some residents expressed frustration, leading to a "petition to pause" the project. However, City Manager Ryan Cummins confirmed the initiative is moving forward, having raised $160,000. A conservation easement will address environmental concerns.
