THE DIGEST
Muskegon Heights $500K Grant For Revitalization

Muskegon Heights downtown strip will undergo a transformation after receiving a $500,000 federal planning grant. Michigan Rep. Hillary Scholten secured the grant for planning purposes, allowing city officials to begin necessary studies and planning efforts. The initial changes will focus on Broadway Avenue and Peck Street, with road lanes being narrowed, bike lanes added, and additional crosswalks installed. Mayor Bonnie McGlothin expressed excitement about the grant and plans to revitalize the area connecting Muskegon Heights with the city of Muskegon. The ultimate goal is to create a thriving Main Street attracting tourists. The process is expected to be multi-year and multi-phase, with planning expected to begin immediately.
Dredging In Saugatuck Began On Tuesday
Saugatuck Harbor will undergo a dredging project to remove 68,000 cubic yards of sediment to maintain safe navigation between Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, announced that work by The King Company of Holland will begin next week and is expected to be completed by July 19. The dredged material will be used to reinforce beaches and nourish the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Corps of Engineers has tested the sediment to ensure it is safe for public health and the environment. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid the dredging areas for safety. The project aims to use at least 70% of dredged material beneficially by 2030, with last year's rate at 30-35%. This project demonstrates the use of maintenance dredging to combat erosion and provide positive outcomes for the community.
Corpse Flower To Bloom

Grand Valley State University's corpse flower, officially named Amorphophallus titanum, is set to bloom at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. The plant, known for its distinct odor that resembles roadkill or rotten fish, attracts pollinators like carrion beetles and flesh flies. It can grow up to 10 feet tall and 4 feet wide, blooming for only 24 to 36 hours. The plant, nicknamed "The Beast," last bloomed in 2022. Its peak bloom is expected between June 14 and 16 at Meijer Gardens. The plant was donated to GVSU in 2015 and is part of their permanent collection. It is native to Sumatra, Indonesia. For more information about Meijer Gardens and hours of operation, check out their website, here.
