THE DIGEST
Balloons Over Bellaire

Balloons Over Bellaire is set to take place on August 23-24 at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire, MI. Nearly two dozen hot air balloons will launch from Summit Mountain behind the Lakeview Hotel, flying over Lake Bellaire. Launches are scheduled for the evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This free event invites spectators to enjoy the vibrant colors of the balloons, although no rides will be offered. Weather conditions will determine the balloon launches. Free parking is available for attendees, who are encouraged to bring cameras to capture the event.
Michigan Getting 3 New Weather Radars
Michigan currently has four weather radars, with some weather events occurring outside their coverage. Climavision plans to install 180 to 200 new radars nationwide, with several designated for Michigan to enhance radar coverage. One radar is planned near Toledo, Ohio, to improve severe weather monitoring in southeast Michigan, while another will cover the Tri-Cities area (Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland), addressing current gaps. A third radar is set for northwest Lower Michigan to better detect lake-effect snow. Climavision’s radars will operate independently from the National Weather Service (NWS) radar network but will provide data access to NWS for better warnings. Climavision uses X band radars with greater resolution than NWS S band radars. The installations aim to improve severe weather forecasting accuracy amid an uptick in severe weather events. Enhanced radar data will particularly benefit regions susceptible to lake-effect snow and tornadoes.
Holland’s Eighth Street Ranks 12th For Pristine Streets
Holland's Eighth Street has earned the impressive distinction of being ranked 12th in a recent survey of America's most pristine streets, conducted by Waste Removal USA, which gathered insights from 3,000 travelers; notably, Eighth Street is one of only two streets from Michigan to make the top 100, alongside S. Main St. in Frankenmuth, which is ranked 58th. The survey's top ten streets span across states such as Georgia, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Utah, South Dakota, Maine, and Arkansas, with Georgia boasting the highest representation, featuring three streets in the top tier. The term "pristine" refers to something that is "not spoiled, corrupted, or polluted," as well as being "fresh and clean." Linda Hart, the Director of the Holland Area Visitors Bureau, expressed her pride in this recognition, highlighting the positive feedback from visitors regarding the community's cleanliness and aesthetic appeal.
