Ships Arrive For Coast Guard

Joel Bissell
The 100th anniversary of the festival was celebrated with a parade of U.S. Coast Guard vessels on July 29. The parade started with the USCGC Buckthorn (WLI-642) from Sault Ste. Marie. A USCG HH-65 Dolphin helicopter flew overhead, followed by the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Samuel Risley from Ottawa, Ontario, which was not part of the initial ship lineup. The parade continued with the USCGC Mobile Bay (WTGB-103), based in Sturgeon Bay, WI, and the USCGC Morro Bay (WTGB-106) from Cleveland. Both ships primarily perform ice-breaking duties on the Great Lakes. The parade concluded with the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter SPAR (WLB-206) from Duluth, MN. The vessels will be docked at Escanaba Park until August 3 and are scheduled to depart on August 4. Here is the weekly schedule for ship tours.
Muskegon Hill Climb At Mount Garfield
The Mount Garfield National Hill Climb, now in its 104th year, returns to Muskegon this weekend. Among the racers is 21-year-old Corbin Davis, who follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, saying, “It’s just in my blood.” Competitor Matt Luna, president of the Muskegon Motorcycle Club, highlights the risks involved, particularly with explosive fuel, urging caution. Despite the physical toll of racing, Luna remains passionate about the sport as a coach. Newcomer Turbo Taylor shares her thrill in racing, recalling a memorable moment when she beat her brother. The three-day event kicks off this Friday at 12 p.m., promising excitement as motorcycles take to the air. Tickets range from $30 to $50 based on the day. You can find more info on the event here.
Northern Lights Possible This Week

The Sun is currently experiencing heightened solar activity, generating multiple solar flares and several Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) aimed at Earth. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) reports that since July 27, these CMEs may affect Earth with geomagnetic storm watches in place from July 29 to 31. The first CME is expected to arrive on July 29, with further effects anticipated on July 30 and possibly continuing through July 31, with storm intensity ranging from G1 to G3 levels. Auroras may be visible as far south as southern Michigan if the Kp Index reaches 6 to 7, though rain may limit visibility.
