THE DIGEST
Lifesaving Robots On The Lakeshore

A couple from South Haven, MI, Ryan and Mandy Servatius, has donated an E.M.I.L.Y. (Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard) robot to a Lake Michigan beach town to enhance safety and save lives. This battery-powered, remote-controlled boat can assist struggling swimmers by providing flotation until rescue services arrive. Earlier this year, two donated E.M.I.L.Y. robots arrived at beaches in St. Joseph and New Buffalo, donated by parents of two teens who died in a tragic drowning in South Haven. The donation will be reviewed by the city’s Parks and Recreation Board, and the plan includes storing the robot in a secure box on the beach, with access provided via a code after a 911 call. With similar systems already in place in Marquette, the Servatius couple believes this initiative can operate effectively even before a lifeguard program is established. A GoFundMe campaign has also been launched to purchase an additional E.M.I.L.Y. robot for North Beach. Citing a commitment to beach safety, Servatius emphasized the importance of creating positive experiences for tourists while reducing the risk of drownings along the coast. This would be a great addition to our local lakeshore beaches.
Guided Lakeshore Hike To Learn Dune Secrets
Deep beneath the sand of the Lake Michigan shorelines lies history dating back to the Ice Age. Ottawa County Parks is offering tours at the Rosy Mound Natural Area, located at 13925 Lakeshore Drive near Grand Haven, to explore the formation of its unique dunes and the endemic plant species found there. George Jaeger, the lead for Ottawa County's Outdoor Education Program, highlights the uniqueness of the dune systems in this region, stating that they are unlike those found on the East Coast or in deserts.
The Dune Discovery Hike is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20. While participation is free, prior registration is encouraged through miottawa.org. The hike is suitable for individuals aged 12 and older, and participants should be prepared for a challenging trek, including a steep incline of about 150 feet above Lake Michigan. The hiking route from the parking area to the shoreline is less than a mile but features 1,000 feet of stairs and offers scenic views. The hike is expected to last an hour and a half, concluding around 7:30 p.m.
Throughout the hike, Jaeger will discuss endemic plant species, the formation of the dunes, and their dynamic nature. The Great Lakes dune system formed at the end of the last Ice Age, when glaciers deposited abundant sand in the region. Rivers carried this sand to the Great Lakes, where it was moved to beaches by waves, and the prevailing winds from the west blew the sand inland to create the dunes along Lakes Michigan and Superior.
Muskegon Approves 2 Major Housing Development Plans
On August 13, 2023, the Muskegon City Commission unanimously approved site plans for two housing developments: The Sand Docks on Muskegon Lake and the former Shaw-Walker factory. The Sand Docks, located on 80 acres in the Bluffton neighborhood, will include housing, private docks, and a marina but will replace 40 proposed single-family homes with up to 20 apartment or condo units due to wetland designations. An additional condition for public parking was added despite some commissioners expressing concerns about the approval process.
The Shaw-Walker development will feature 557 housing units, restaurants, commercial spaces, and amenities like a rooftop pool and indoor parking, addressing conditions including obtaining stormwater permits and adding bike racks. Both developments will also require city approval for landscaping and utility plans. Mayor Ken Johnson emphasized the importance of public access to natural resources in future development policies.

18th Amendment In Muskegon For Sale
18th Amendment Spirits, situated at 350 W Western Ave. in downtown Muskegon, is for sale for $1.3 million, with Core Realty Partners listing the distillery's furniture, equipment, and distilling license. After announcing plans to reopen as a bar and restaurant nearly a year ago, the establishment temporarily closed in September and has since remained inactive, with no updates on social media or its now-defunct website. Founded in April 2017 by Michael Brower and Mark Fellwock, the venue offered crafted cocktails and wood-fired pizzas, paying homage to Prohibition. The owner has not commented on the situation.
