THE DIGEST

107 Year Old Ferry Service May Come To An End

The impending multi-year infrastructure project at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is set to close North and South Manitou Islands, potentially ending the 107-year-old Manitou Island Transit ferry service. North Manitou will close in 2025, followed by South Manitou in 2026, for dock reconstruction and utility upgrades. The ferry service, already struggling, might shut down permanently as the National Park Service plans to close the islands for at least two years. The service has faced ongoing financial difficulties due to unsafe dock conditions, which have prevented it from accessing North Manitou for most of the year. Owners, Jimmy and Megan Munoz, are considering another lawsuit against the Park Service after a previous successful suit in 2021. A federal contract worth nearly $28 million for the project was awarded to Coastal Construction Group. Visitor access will be severely limited during construction, potentially increasing reliance on private boating.

Giant Bubble Show Comes To West Michigan

A fresh entertainment experience is heading to West Michigan this weekend, perfect for families. The Circus Pop! The Giant Bubble Show will be taking place at the Playhouse at White Lake on Saturday, Nov. 9. This one-man spectacle combines magic, music, and bubble artistry.

Bubble artist Logan Jimenez guarantees an “unbelievaBUBBLE” performance, showcasing his skills by transforming soap into whimsical shapes like a volcano, a tennis racket, a snowman, and even crafting a single bubble large enough for six people to fit inside. “This show is truly the only show of its type in the world today,” Jimenez said in a statement. “I can’t wait to share this magical journey with the audience. It doesn’t matter if you are 2 or 102, you love bubbles. And I guarantee you have never seen bubbles like this before.” Visit theplayhouseatwhitelake.org for more information.

Visit The Muskegon Blockhouse

Nestled within Muskegon State Park’s forested dunes, the Blockhouse is a historical replica that has graced the landscape since 1931. Perched atop the highest point in Muskegon County, it offers breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. This replica of Fort Dearborn, which once stood along the Chicago River, symbolizes the region’s lumber industry and its connection to Chicago's rebuilding after the Great Chicago Fire. Constructed during the Great Depression as part of FDR’s New Deal, the Blockhouse served as a make-work project, employing local workers. It was tragically burned down by arsonists in 1962 but rebuilt two years later through community efforts, including the involvement of the young offenders. Despite facing further threats over the years, the Blockhouse remains a beloved landmark today. While its interior is closed in winter, visitors can still enjoy the stunning panoramic vistas year-round.
