Lake Michigan Drownings Rise

As swimming season ends, unofficial reports indicate 88 drownings in the Great Lakes for 2024, surpassing last year's 85. Lake Michigan accounts for 52 of these drownings, a rise from 41 in 2023, according to Bob Pratt, executive director of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. He noted a significant increase in drownings on the Michigan side of Lake Michigan, with 11 this year compared to six last year.

Pratt emphasizes the importance of water safety, advocating for better education and the implementation of lifeguard programs. Despite the season's close, drowning incidents can occur year-round, often linked to activities like boating or icy conditions. He urges city officials in South Haven to prioritize lifeguard programs to enhance beach safety. With over 1,300 drownings recorded since 2010, Pratt and safety advocates are committed to reducing these tragic incidents. Michigan, Milkweeds And Saving Monarchs

Lauri Juday passionately distributes common milkweed seeds, urging recipients to plant them, as these plants are vital for the survival of monarch butterflies in Michigan— a critical migratory pathway for the species. By hand-rearing monarch caterpillars each summer, Juday raises awareness about their dependence on milkweed for laying eggs and feeding. With declining monarch populations, advocates emphasize the need to rehabilitate milkweed, especially now that Michigan has removed its noxious weed status.

Pollinator health, crucial for ecosystems and agriculture, hinges on supporting species like monarchs. Recent legislation encourages the planting of milkweed, fostering community efforts to create habitats. Juday and other advocates suggest people “seed bomb” public spaces with milkweed. With Michigan potentially becoming a sanctuary for monarch butterflies due to climate change, there's momentum for broader planting initiatives, combining environmental benefits with aesthetic appreciation for milkweed’s beauty in native landscapes.

LOCAL BUSINESS

DoorDash Awards 10k To Muskegon Restaurant

Navarro’s Mexican Takeout, a nearly 50-year-old family business in Muskegon Heights, received a $10,000 grant from DoorDash's Restaurant Disaster Relief Fund, making it the only Michigan recipient this summer. The funding will aid recovery after severe storms caused a power outage, damaging one of its freezers and leading to significant revenue loss. Owner Marisela Sierra plans to invest the grant in an outdoor walk-in cooler to enhance food storage and resilience against future outages. Navarro’s, known for its stone-ground tamales and the popular “Panchita” nacho plate, strives to serve the local community in a food desert.
