THE DIGEST

Fourth of July List Of Parades & Fireworks

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted, signifying the colonies' break from Great Britain. To commemorate this historic event, Americans come together to celebrate with fireworks, parades, and festivals. To find an event near you, check out the list here.

Lake Michigan Water Temps Have Recently Plunged

The warm June weather has been beneficial for the Great Lakes, warming up the water at the beaches. However, on Sunday, upwelling occurred at many Lake Michigan and Lake Huron beaches due to wind direction, causing colder water from below to rise up to the surface. The north wind led to upwelling at Lake Michigan beaches, except in downtown Traverse City where the warmest water was retained. At popular beaches like Port Sheldon, the surface water temperature dropped significantly but has since started to rise again. Warmer water is expected to return to the Michigan shoreline when the wind shifts to the south-southwest. By Tuesday, most beaches along the Lake Michigan shoreline are expected to have water temperatures around 70 degrees. No more north winds are expected until the weekend.

Muskegon 3rd Graders Write & Publish Book

Third graders in Muskegon Public Schools’ two-way Spanish Immersion Program wrote stories that were published in a hardcover book at the end of the school year. The book, titled All in One: Cinderella Tales, featured stories written by the students with their own illustrations. The book was published by Student Treasures Publishing and presented to the students before the end of the school year. The teacher, Mrs. Tiffany Hirdes, wanted to showcase the students' hard work and provide motivation for their writing. The students were excited to see their stories in the book and read them together. Mrs. Hirdes plans to have her students' stories published again at their new school next year.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Holland Hilltop Acres Not Returning This Fall

Holland Hilltop Acres, a relatively new pumpkin patch in Holland, will not return in 2024 as operators decide to prioritize time with family. The farm offered pumpkins, a straw maze, a corn box, fresh donuts and coffee for sale, a barrel train, a hayride, and a recently added one-acre corn maze. Admission was $7 per person or $35 for a family of five or more. The decision to close was announced on social media on June 28, with the operators expressing gratitude for the community's support over the past three years and stating that family time was the main reason for the closure.
