THE DIGEST

Art Prize Returns To Grand Rapids

ArtPrize began in 2009 in Grand Rapids, attracting significant crowds and media attention with over 1,200 art entries, including large sculptures and a paper airplane installation. The festival provided economic boosts to local businesses and fostered community pride. However, participation and excitement have declined since its peak, particularly post-COVID-19. In 2024, ArtPrize expects around 885 entries, an increase from 730 last year. The grand prize, reduced to $125,000 in past years, has been partially restored to retain artist interest. This year’s kickoff will feature fireworks, parades, and live events across 16 days, showcasing artists from over 40 countries. ArtPrize continues to evolve as a cultural asset, despite concerns about the declining quality and novelty of artwork. Organizers are committed to revitalizing the festival, promoting it as a vibrant experience for both visitors and locals while supporting small businesses in downtown Grand Rapids.

Muskegon Airport Getting $3 Million In Upgrades

Muskegon County Airport is undergoing nearly $3 million in renovations to revitalize its 30-year-old terminal, which has original features from 1994. Upgrades include new restrooms, a modern front façade, and restaurant reopening, aimed at attracting travelers. Additionally, runway improvements, part of a $20.3 million investment, will replace 25% of the pavement, install new LED lights, and shift the taxiway to enhance safety standards. Airport Director Ken Efting highlighted these changes as vital for the airport's resurgence in 2024 and 2025. Furthermore, the airport will replace Southern Airways Express with Denver Air Connection to improve passenger numbers and reliability.

131 Old Shipwreck Visible On Lake Michigan Beach

ARCADIA, MI – The remnants of a 131-year-old shipwreck are clearly visible as they emerge from the sand along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Minnehaha ran aground in October 1893 and was dismantled by the waves. Today, its remains lie in two sections: one at the Arcadia Beach Natural Area and the other just north of the city beach. If you're planning to drive along M-22 to enjoy the autumn colors, it's definitely worth taking a quick detour to see this historic site.

Find this shipwreck just off M-22 in northern Manistee County. Traveling north on M-22, turn left onto Lake Street in Arcadia and continue west until the road becomes the Arcadia Beach parking lot.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Holistic Medicine Coming To Norton Shores

Nature’s Helping Hand, a holistic medicine clinic owned by Tracy Burgess, plans to purchase the building at 4788 Grand Haven Road from All Seasons Property Investments, LLC. Burgess seeks special land use permitting to convert the 5,500-square-foot space, currently occupied by 4 Seasons Home Crafters, into a center for multiple health-related businesses. The building is listed at $469,900 and has been on the market for 77 days. Alongside her business, the center would include a chiropractor, nutrition service, skincare services, and a personal training gym. The plan is contingent on approval from the Norton Shores City Council.

Muskegon Is Looking For Buyers

The Nelson House, a 155-year-old Italianate mansion in Muskegon, is up for sale after being relocated from 1292 Jefferson St. to 382 W. Muskegon Ave. on July 17. Acquired by the city to avoid demolition, it is undergoing restoration. Bid proposals for its purchase are due by 2 p.m. on Nov. 21, with no minimum bid requirement. The house must remain an owner-occupied single-family home. Originally built in 1869 by Charles D. Nelson, it served as a rectory and was purchased for $100. The relocation and foundation setting cost approximately $230,000. Interested bidders can request site tours. More info here.
