THE DIGEST

Michigan Hosts Largest Jazz Fest In The World

The Detroit Jazz Festival, the largest in the world, takes place annually in downtown Detroit. This year, it will run from August 30 to September 2, featuring over 60 performances across multiple stages during the four-day event, attracting over 300,000 attendees globally. Planning for the next festival begins immediately after each year's event ends, according to Chris Collins, President and Artistic Director. Artists are selected through open auditions held from February to June, ensuring a fresh lineup each year. The festival is funded by independent donors, sponsors, and grants, requiring approximately $4.5 million annually to remain free for all attendees. Additionally, the festival is available via livestream for those unable to attend in person, a practice that started during COVID-19 when the festival was held online.

Good News! Pause In Some Road Construction

This weekend, over half of Michigan's ongoing construction projects on state-managed roads will pause to alleviate traffic and enhance safety for Labor Day. From 3 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, 60% of the 161 projects will lift traffic restrictions, as reported by the state Department of Health and Human Services. However, some equipment and lane configurations may remain, so drivers should stay alert. State Transportation Director Brad Wieferich noted that this decision aims to accommodate holiday travelers. Congestion is expected during the afternoon and early evening hours on Thursday and Friday, with the best travel times being Thursday morning, Friday morning, or Saturday afternoon. For details on remaining lane closures, a full list of projects is available on the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) website online map and construction list.

Endangered Mussels To Be Added To Grand River

Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss advises fall anglers to maintain a 100-foot distance from divers relocating 14,000 to 15,000 endangered mussels in the Grand River for the river's restoration. This project, occurring from August to October, aims to remove four dams and add rocks and boulders to enhance river features, coinciding with the fall salmon and steelhead fishing season. While anglers are not prohibited from the downtown area (Bridge Street to Fulton Street), awareness of divers is encouraged. There is no mention of penalties for anglers within the radius, as city officials request courteous behavior. The relocation, part of a larger restoration effort, has received the necessary permits for moving mussels to approved sites. Signage will be installed to inform anglers about the work area. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2025.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Mixed-income Apartment Construction Starts In Holland

On August 21, local leaders and developers announced the groundbreaking of Lakewood Place Apartment Village in Holland Township. This $40 million project, a collaboration between Geerlings Development Company and KJK Real Estate Management, will include 190 units—80% of which will be affordable housing for families earning 50-70% of the area median income. The development will also feature 10,000 square feet of commercial space, bike paths, a clubhouse, and other amenities. Completion is expected in phases between April 2025 and 2026. The site is located at 275 E. Lakewood Blvd, roughly two miles from downtown Holland.

Depot Antiques To Close In Spring Lake

Depot Antiques, located just east of Spring Lake on M-104, offers a unique variety of items, from antique soup tureens to vintage motorcycles. After nearly 25 years, owner Ruth Bisacky is closing the shop due to dwindling interest in antiques and the rise of online shopping. Everything is discounted, with unsold items going to auction by year-end. The shop, housed in a former train depot, holds treasures like croquet mallets, mirrors, and old records. Bisacky cherishes the connections made over the years but is ready to retire, leaving a legacy of eclectic finds for a new generation of collectors.
