THE DIGEST
Lake Michigan Beach Guide

The return of summer also means the return of the WOOD TV8 Lake Michigan Summer Beach Guide.
The interactive map lists the facilities at 55 beaches along the stretch from St. Joseph to Ludington, along with information on parking fees, restroom availability, and dog-friendliness. A few updates is that P.J. Hoffmaster is now fully reopen and Kirk Park is ready for dogs. Click here for the link to map.
Holland Is A HeartSafe Community
Holland has fulfilled 13 requirements established by a national readiness program to become a HeartSafe Community. With the founding of HeartSafe Holland in September 2022—a coalition of regional organizations and cardiac arrest survivors—efforts to obtain this designation got underway. A significant section of the community received hands-only CPR training through events and training sessions. Ottawa County was also introduced to PulsePoint, an app that notifies users of nearby cardiac events and AED locations. On May 28, Van Bragt Park will host a celebration to honor the designation. Along River Avenue, a road sign identifying Holland as a HeartSafe Community is already in place.
Walleye Challenge
The 2024 Midwest Walleye Challenge is open to Michigan anglers, providing the opportunity to win cash prizes, gift certificates, fishing gear, and more. The challenge, running until June 30, is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and MyCatch by Angler’s Atlas. Anglers will compete against each other for biweekly prizes, with all catches from participating states and provinces eligible for grand prize drawings. The event is part of a fisheries research project funded by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. Participants will use the MyCatch mobile app to report their catches, providing valuable data for fisheries officials without revealing specific catch locations. Anglers can choose a free entry option for non cash prizes or pay a $25 entry fee to qualify for all prizes. Register here.
LOCAL BUSINESS
Ottawa Beach General Store reopens
On May 24 at 12 p.m., the Ottawa Beach General Store in Holland reopened in a new structure. September saw the demolition of the original building because of foundation problems. Not only does the new building adhere to modern construction codes, but it also closely mimics the original structure. Operating the store, Linda Dykert is thrilled to see returning patrons and carry on serving the neighborhood and visitors. In addition to ice cream, the store sells drinks, snacks, souvenirs, and camping supplies. Dykert is appreciative of the efforts made to uphold the custom and anticipates a fruitful summer.
