THE DIGEST
Pumpkinfest In Zeeland

Pumpkinfest will take place in Zeeland from Thursday to Saturday, October 3-5. This year's theme is "Happily Ever After." On Thursday from 5-7 p.m., the first 1,000 attendees will receive free doughnuts and cider. Attendees can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides and surprise character appearances, as well as interact with local authors at the Howard Miller Library. The Avenue of Art on Main Street will feature large wooden structures themed to the festival. An escorted tour at Tripelroot is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1, for visitors to meet the artists.
KIDZFEST will be held on Church Street on Friday and Saturday, featuring face painting, a petting zoo, and inflatable obstacle courses. The festival will also include food vendors, barrel train rides, stage performances, and live music. A laser light show is planned for dusk on Friday. A list of all the events and times can be found here.
EPA Exempts “Lakers” From Onboard Treatment Systems
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized ballast water regulations that exempt existing Great Lakes ships, known as "lakers," from installing onboard treatment systems to prevent the spread of invasive species. Effective Sept. 24, the regulations apply only to new oceangoing vessels and new lake freighters. The decision was made due to the high costs and technological challenges of retrofitting existing lakers, which transport millions of gallons of ballast water between ports.
Environmental groups oppose this exemption, arguing it allows for continued movement of invasive species within the Great Lakes. They cite evidence that lakers have contributed to the spread of non-native species. The rule follows the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act of 2018, which assigned the U.S. Coast Guard to enforce these regulations. While older lakers are exempt, new lakers must include treatment systems when built. The final rule will not go into effect for a couple of years.
The Grand Hotel Ranks Top In Midwest

According to Condé Nast's 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards, two Michigan resorts ranked among the top five in the Midwest. The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island was awarded the No. 1 spot, while Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth secured No. 5.
The Grand Hotel, which opened in 1887, covers 332,500 square feet and boasts the world's longest front porch at 660 feet. It accommodates over 150,000 guests each season and has hosted six U.S. Presidents.
Saint John’s Resort recently completed a multi-million-dollar renovation, including new amenities such as an 18-hole championship golf course, The Wine Grotto, Doyles Irish Pub, and a new event space. Condé Nast's survey received over 575,000 votes, ranking hotels, spas, cruise lines, and more.
LOCAL BUSINESS
New Jet Service At Muskegon Airport
Denver Air Connection will start flying passengers between Muskegon County Airport and Chicago O'Hare on Nov. 1, offering 24 weekly flights in a 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 plane. The airline connects with Delta, American, and United. Denver Air has a 99.75% completion rate, a significant improvement over the previous airline, Southern Airways Express, which canceled 43% of its flights. The goal is to serve 20,000 passengers in the first year, with the aim to return to pre-pandemic levels. U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten emphasized the airport's growth potential, highlighting improved service and amenities for passengers.
Chalo Indian Kitchen To Open In Holland
Chalo Indian Kitchen is set to open in November at The Shops at Westshore in Holland. Co-owned by Sharmila Rajeshkumar, it will be the couple's second restaurant in West Michigan, following Grand Indian Cuisine in Grand Rapids. The menu will feature a variety of Indian dishes, including curries, naan, biryani, and desserts made from locally sourced ingredients. Popular offerings will include Butter Chicken, Paneer Butter Masala, and Tandoori Chicken. The restaurant will follow a grab-and-go concept and aims to provide an exceptional dining experience. It is located in the former Tha Rock’N Roosta space.
