THE DIGEST
Memorial Day Events Along The Lakeshore

Americans commemorate Memorial Day to honor those who lost their lives while serving in the military. Originally known as Decoration Day, this holiday was established shortly after the Civil War as a way for people to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. In 1971, Memorial Day became an official holiday observed on the last Monday in May. In West Michigan, residents are celebrating with various events such as ceremonies, parades, and picnics. To find a Memorial Day event near you, visit here. Grand Haven was not listed, but the parade is scheduled for 9am and a full day of events.
1,522 Volunteers for Community Impact Day
On May 15, 1,522 volunteers participated in the third annual Community Impact Day in West Michigan, working on projects at 70 sites in Holland, Fennville, Grand Rapids, and surrounding communities. Mayor Nathan Bocks and West Coast Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jodi Owczarski visited sites to show support and gratitude to the volunteers. The event has grown significantly, with over 900 volunteers the year before. Owczarski expressed gratitude for the community's willingness to invest in making a positive impact, and Mayor Bocks praised the volunteers for coming together to improve Holland. Thank you to all the volunteers 👏
