Nuclear Waste Storage Along The Great Lakes
Nuclear waste casks made of steel and concrete, which have been used to cool spent fuel rods after years of operation in nuclear reactors, are kept in storage along the Michigan coast. The proximity of radioactive waste to the Great Lakes is a source of concern, particularly with the advancement of plans to reopen the Palisades reactor. Experts emphasize the safety precautions taken to keep radioactive material out of the water when comparing dry cask storage to spent fuel pools. In addition to increasing costs for plant operators, the United States' lack of a national repository for radioactive waste poses risks to the environment and public health. Private companies are now participating in the search for a viable location for the long-term storage of radioactive waste. Political, legal, and environmental challenges persist in finding a solution for the safe storage of nuclear waste. More on it here.
Kick-Off to Summer Run in Grand Haven
The Tri-Cities Family YMCA has hosted two run events in Grand Haven for over 30 years, featuring challenging courses and beautiful views of Lake Michigan. Proceeds benefit youth and family programs at the YMCA. The Team Grand Haven Custom Molding Kick-Off to Summer Run includes a US Track & Field certified 5k Run and a 1 Mile Family Fun Run/Walk, welcoming participants of all ages. The event promotes healthy lifestyles and community building in the area. I may or may not have stopped once to catch my breath the last time I ran in this. Allegedly…..
