THE DIGEST

Relocation Of Historic Italianate Mansion

Residents gathered to watch a 155-year-old Italianate mansion, known as the Nelson House, be wheeled through downtown Muskegon. Originally built by lumber businessman Charles D. Nelson in 1869, the mansion had served as a private residence and later as a rectory for a Catholic church. Scheduled for demolition, the city of Muskegon stepped in and purchased the house for a nominal fee of $100 in June. The cost of moving and setting a new foundation is around $230,000. The mansion was built in 1869 by Charles D. Nelson, a prominent figure in the community. The house was moved multiple times throughout its history. The city plans to sell the mansion in as-is condition for renovation by a private owner. Residents hope it will be preserved and potentially open for public tours. The city is requesting photos of the home to assist the future owner in proper preservation.

Great Lakes Water Levels Normalizing

The recent water levels of the Great Lakes have shown fluctuations, with Lake Erie currently above the long-term average. Lake Superior has returned to average levels after reaching near-record highs in 2019. Lake Michigan and Lake Huron have been near average levels for over a year, following record highs in 2020. Lake Ontario's water levels tend to fluctuate due to regulation mechanisms. Overall, the Great Lakes have been hovering around normal water levels, providing ample beach space compared to a few years ago when levels were at record highs.

Muskegon Native Pimpleton Thrills In CFL Debut

Kalil Pimpleton made an impressive CFL debut, scoring a 70-yard touchdown in the final minutes of the game. He finished with 153 yards and a touchdown in Ottawa's win over the Elks. Pimpleton previously played at Central Michigan and had stints with the Lions and Giants before joining the CFL. He remains hopeful for a return to the NFL in the future. Pimpleton's faith plays a significant role in his career and he looks to inspire others through his actions on and off the field.

The Gritzmaker Opens In Zeeland

The Gritzmaker Social House opened at 120 E. Main St. in downtown Zeeland shortly after the return of Public Restaurant. The new restaurant opened on July 1 and offers lunch, dinner, and late night drinks. The restaurant received approval from Zeeland City Council for a liquor license and social district in June 2023. Owner Scott Ingersoll described the restaurant as the first of its kind in Zeeland, with a professional, pub-type atmosphere before dinner and a family-style restaurant after. The Gritzmaker is located in the old Elbo Room, and it is Ingersoll's second attempt to open a restaurant there. The menu includes a variety of appetizers, soups, salads, specialty burgers, entrees, sandwiches, and lunch specials. More info can be found here.
