World Of Winter, 9.7 Million Fish Stocked, Lions Ticket Tops NFL...

Grand rising, West Michigan. January 16th is National Nothing Day. This observance was created to give Americans a day when they can simply sit without celebrating, observing, or honoring anything… Am I doing this right by acknowledging it? 🤔

In today’s Lakeshore Current:

  • Lions Ticket Tops NFL 🦁

  • World Of Winter ❄️

  • 9.7 Millon Fish Stocked 🐟️

THE DIGEST

World Of Winter

The largest winter festival in the U.S., the World of Winter, kicked off its sixth season in downtown Grand Rapids on Saturday evening. Festivalgoers flocked to 555 Monroe Ave. NW along the Grand River to enjoy a vibrant celebration. DJ Adrian Butler energized the crowd, while fire pits provided warmth, and Ice Guru Events showcased live ice carving of the city skyline. Grand Rapids Entertainment delivered thrilling fire performances, and a sauna truck was available for those wanting to embrace the cold in style. Attendees sampled various offerings from multiple food trucks, engaged in outdoor yard games, and interacted with LiteZilla, a giant LiteBrite board. Art installations dotted the landscape at Ah-Nab-Awen Park and the Blue Bridge. Hosted by Downtown Grand Rapids, Inc., the World of Winter Festival runs from January 10 to March 10, featuring over 100 art installations, live performances, and activities designed to encourage community engagement and enjoyment during the cold winter months. Detroit Lions Playoff Ticket Tops NFL Prices

The Detroit Lions enjoyed a weekend of rest while six NFC teams fought for playoff spots. The Washington Commanders emerged as the lowest-seeded team to advance, setting up a matchup against the Lions. Scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, this game has generated significant buzz among fans. Ticket prices reflect the excitement, averaging $991 on Tick Pick, the highest recorded for an NFL game outside the Super Bowl. Prices range from $536 for standing room to over $5,000 for premium seats, highlighting the high stakes as both teams vie for a chance in the NFC Championship. Let’s Go Lions!!

9.7 Million Fish Stocked In 2024

This past fall, Michigan stocked 590,504 fish across 78 locations, culminating in a total of 9.7 million fish for the year. While spring is typically the peak stocking season, the fall effort featured seven species: Atlantic salmon, brook trout, brown trout, lake trout, rainbow trout, walleye, and muskellunge.

Aaron Switzer, manager of the DNR Fish Production Program, noted the season's success in enhancing fishing opportunities statewide. Key stocking sites included Marquette State Fish Hatchery, which distributed brook and lake trout, and Platte River State Fish Hatchery, which released Atlantic salmon into Lake Huron. Other hatcheries, such as Oden and Thompson, contributed significant numbers of brown trout and muskellunge across the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Additionally, fall fingerling walleye were stocked in various locations by DNR fisheries management units along Lake Michigan and Lake Erie. For detailed information on the species and locations, visit the Michigan DNR website.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Muskegon Manufacturer Pursues Historic Designation After 125 years

CW Marsh, Muskegon’s oldest manufacturer, recently celebrated its 125th anniversary, continuing to produce leather seals for hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. Founded in 1900 by Charles Marsh, the company began in his kitchen after his previous employer went bankrupt. Its first sale was to Ingersoll-Rand, which became a loyal customer for a century. Despite a decline in size, now employing 15 with annual sales of $2.6 million, CW Marsh remains dedicated to its high-quality products, particularly the Vee Packing used in paint sprayers. The company is seeking historic designation for its factory, which still houses artifacts from its early days. Notably, CW Marsh has supplied NASA and received recent requests from the Hoover Dam, highlighting its capacity to handle custom jobs. The leather seals they produce outlast synthetic alternatives, making them ideal for various applications, including windmill-driven pumps for cattle ranchers.

Own A Piece Of The Mackinac Bridge

The Mackinac Bridge Authority is auctioning seven original steel grating pieces from the Mackinac Bridge, each measuring 5½ by 38 feet and weighing around 2 tons. To facilitate shipping, the seller will cut each piece into two shorter sections but will make no other cuts. The auction proceeds will support the bridge's maintenance. Current bids range from $1,025 to $2,525. Buyers must sign a “hold harmless agreement” due to the grating’s previous lead paint coating. Bids are accepted until January 21 at 10 a.m. The seller will assist with loading but not securing the items for transport. Check out auction here.
