THE DIGEST
Rye Seed Revival
Mammoth Distilling, in partnership with Michigan State University, is working to revive Bentley rye, an old rye variety salvaged from the 1878 shipwreck of the James R. Bentley in Lake Huron. On September 17, divers extracted seeds from 160 feet underwater, where they had been preserved for 146 years. Initially, the seeds did not germinate, but expert Eric Olson is now extracting their DNA to compare it with modern varieties, aiming to reintroduce this historic rye into today’s agriculture. The initiative aligns with Mammoth Distilling’s vision of creating a Michigan Rye Trail, similar to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Owner Chad Munger emphasizes the importance of transparency, encouraging consumers to understand the origins of their grains, which are proudly sourced from Michigan. Ultimately, this project not only seeks to resurrect a unique rye but also to enhance agritourism and celebrate local distilling heritage in Michigan. Shout out to Sparty!
Tri-Cities Museum Donation
Grand Haven’s Tri-Cities Historical Museum is set to unveil a new kid-friendly play area, the “Maritime Exploration Space,” centered on local maritime history, with construction beginning in early 2025. Funded by a $20,000 grant from the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, the project aims to invigorate the museum's offerings for the first time in 20 years. An additional $77,000 is sought to complete the $115,000 budget. The play area will engage children with interactive elements like climbing, knot-tying, and fishing activities. It will feature a lighthouse, photos depicting local water-based activities, and a large display highlighting maritime history. Curators will rotate artifacts for preservation and enhance storytelling about the region’s rich history of boatbuilding and shipping. This initiative promises to transform a currently underutilized space into an interactive hub for families and school groups, promoting connections to local history and community.
Last Of The Year Supermoon Hike In Muskegon

Participants should gather at the lodge by 6:30 p.m., bringing a flashlight and an adventurous spirit. After the hike, enjoy a cozy bonfire in the Hike the Lights pathway, where you can purchase roasting kits and hot chocolate for a quintessential campfire experience. Season Pass Holders get a free hot dog or s’mores kit as a bonus. The family-friendly event also features a scavenger hunt bingo card—score a bingo and receive a complimentary hot chocolate at the lodge.
