THE DIGEST

Lake Michigan Beach Takes State Title

First Street Beach in Manistee, Michigan was named the best beach in the state by USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice award. It beat out Stearns Park in Ludington to claim the top spot. Other beaches in the top 10 include Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Oval Beach in Saugatuck, and Hunter's Point Park in Copper Harbor. First Street Beach features a pavilion, concessions, playgrounds, sports courts, a disc golf course, a boat launch, a dog beach, and other amenities. The beach is connected to downtown Manistee by the Manistee Riverwalk. Parking at the beach is free and the beach is ADA-accessible. First Street Beach hosts various events throughout the year.

Port Sheldon Celebrates 100 Years

Port Sheldon Township will commemorate its centennial, marking 100 years of settlement along the lakeshore. Although officially organized in 1924, the township traces its roots back to 1835 when the Port Sheldon Land Company was established, later breaking away from Olive Township. Known for its thriving fruit farming industry, with hundreds of acres still dedicated to crops, Port Sheldon is gearing up for a series of centennial events, such as historical displays and a community picnic. Amidst preparations for the closure of the J.H. Campbell Power Plant in 2025, which will impact tax revenue, the township is focusing on an Economic Resiliency Response Plan to offset the loss. Supervisor Mike Sabatino highlights the importance of unity and collaboration as Port Sheldon looks towards the future.

Narrow Win At Grand Haven Offshore Challenge

Pure Chaos, by a narrow margin over In-U-Endo, took home the first-place trophy and $22,500 at the Grand Haven Offshore Challenge. Crazy Loons took first place in the amateur league and won $7,500. More than 60 boats participated in the tournament, and about 2,500 pounds of fish were caught. Under the direction of Chris Peplinski, the winning team of Pure Chaos caught about 150 pounds of fish, the largest of which was a 15.7-pound brown trout. Traveling to compete in different events around Lake Michigan is a requirement for tournament participants. Tony Salerno, the tournament president, and the committee plan the event and find sponsors for the substantial payouts over the course of almost a year. There was a pro/am tournament along with three other events that week, totaling prize money close to $60,000. Anglers had the choice to either retain their catch or donate it, resulting in the collection of approximately 1,500 pounds of fish that were then gifted to Teen Challenge, a rehabilitation facility situated in Muskegon.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Muskegon Boys And Girls Club Opening

The Boys and Girls Club of Muskegon Lakeshore is opening its new $11.4 million clubhouse facility after an arson attack last year. The complex was damaged by fire just before its initial opening date, causing $6.5 million in damages. Despite the setback, the Club has used the time to prepare for the opening. The new facility offers services and programs for kids from kindergarten to high school, with activities such as art classes and STEM labs. The Club aims to provide a space for young people to develop their passions and skills. The building also features the Neal Fitness Center, opening to the public on June 3rd. The Clubhouse has a ribbon-cutting ceremony happening Wednesday, June 5th and the massive swimming pool opens up on July 1st. The Club is still raising funds to cover building costs. You can donate funds here.

Sweet Spot Opens In Saugatuck

Sweet Spot Saugatuck opened on May 25 at 133 Butler St., offering 166 candy flavors, fudge, and ice cream. Co-owner Mary Kay was pleased with the warm reception from the community. The store, co-owned by the landlord of the Mackinaw City location, was a collaborative effort completed in just two months with the help of friends. Operating daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., the store has a dedicated team providing excellent service. Kay expressed gratitude for the community's support and excitement for the new venture.
