THE DIGEST

Water Safety Grant For Muskegon

A new grant from the CDC Foundation aims to provide vital water safety education to students in Muskegon County. The Muskegon YMCA has become the first recipient in Michigan of funding from the CDC's Understanding and Preventing Drowning initiative, which was launched after 4,500 drowning deaths occurred in the U.S. from 2020 to 2022.

The grant will enhance the YMCA's Safety Around Water program, which teaches students how to protect themselves and others. With classes at local schools and swimming pools, the program covers essential topics such as rip currents, the use of life jackets, and safety around frozen water. Community Engagement Coordinator Airn Sessink emphasizes the importance of comprehensive education beyond swimming, highlighting the motto "reach, throw, don’t go" from the American Red Cross. This advice encourages bystanders to assist drowning individuals without entering the water themselves.

Fennville’s 40th Goose Festival

Fennville celebrates the 40th Goose Festival from October 10-13, a vibrant weekend filled with goose-themed activities. The festival kicks off Thursday with a "Chalk-Out" on Main Street from 4-9 p.m. and a carnival running until 10 p.m. On Friday, an expanded "Chalk-Out" features food trucks, drinks, gel ball, and laser tag from 2-10 p.m., an opening reception for a student art show at 5 p.m., and live music starting at 7 p.m.

Saturday offers the Wild Goose Chase 5K at 8 a.m., car shows, and various art and history exhibits. Events for youth vendors and performers also abound, with a glow car show and tribute bands entertaining attendees in the evening. Sunday wraps up the festivities with exhibits and a children's Gosling Run at 1 p.m., followed by the Wildlife Parade at 2:30 p.m., ending with a party under the big tent. More info on the event can be found here.

Season Closing For Great Lakers Cruise Ships

The Great Lakes cruising season is nearing its end, with just about a week left to catch a glimpse of these luxurious ships at Michigan ports. The season wraps up in mid-October as temperatures begin to drop. Currently, Ponant Cruise Lines is the sole cruise operator in the Great Lakes, featuring three active vessels. Mackinac Island, a favorite destination among travelers, is anticipating three more cruise ship visits. Ponant's luxury ships can also be spotted at Sault Ste. Marie and navigating through the Detroit River. Meanwhile, other cruise ports have already said farewell to their last ships of the season. Alpena celebrated its final visit on Friday with the Viking Polaris. This year, Viking ships Polaris and Octantis made a combined total of 26 stops in the Lake Huron city.

"Passengers consistently rank Alpena as one of their favorite stops, noting the area's beauty, cleanliness, friendly residents, and unique shops and restaurants," stated the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Viking is anticipated to return to the Great Lakes for the 2025 season, starting in April, and is often the first company to commence voyages in the spring. The 2025 season is also expected to feature Pearl Mist Cruises, Victory Cruise Lines, and Ponant Cruise Lines.
