THE DIGEST

Trout Fishing While Playing Disc Golf

Patterson Park in Ravenna, Muskegon County, is a 28-acre park located at 5995 Blackmer Rd. It recently had updates including the removal of a dam in Little Rio Grande Creek to improve fishing conditions. According to the Muskegon Conservation District, the Little Rio Grande Creek is special because it has a 3% slope that is normally only found in the Upper Peninsula, which favors fish that can "climb" steep banks. These comprise coho and chinook salmon as well as brown and rainbow trout. The park also features a new 18-hole disc golf course installed last year, designed by local resident Tim Linck Jr. The park is pet-friendly and offers picnic areas, bird watching, and wildflower scouting opportunities. Restrooms are open seasonally from May to September.

Explore Bear Cave Near Lake Michigan

Bear Cave in Buchanan, Michigan is one of the state's only public cave systems, located on private property at the Thousand Trails Bear Cave RV Resort. The cave was formed over 25,000 years ago and features 18-foot thick tufa limestone walls. Visitors can take a self-guided tour along a circular path, observing fossils and unique limestone formations like cave pearls. The cave has a history of being used as a hiding spot for bank robbers and enslaved individuals during the Underground Railroad. Nowadays, it is home to a large population of Eastern Pipistrelle Bats. The cave is at risk of flooding due to its proximity to the river and is most popular on weekends. While bears are no longer seen in the cave, visitors can purchase bear-themed souvenirs at the gift shop. More info can be found here.

Lake Michigan Dangerous Beach Conditions

Hazardous beach conditions are expected for all Lake Michigan beaches on Tuesday, caused by a line of showers and thunderstorms moving across the lake in the morning. Swimming is strongly discouraged by the National Weather Service. Large waves and strong rip currents are expected, with the hazardous conditions lasting until the evening. Small craft advisories and hazardous beach statements have been issued until Tuesday evening. NWS meteorologists in Grand Rapids have warned that swimming near piers can be especially dangerous. If caught in a rip current, it is advised to float and swim parallel to the coast to escape.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Odd Side Golf Open

Mark your calendars for June 29 because Odd Side Ales is hosting a fundraiser at Pigeon Creek Golf Course for Sidekicks of West Michigan! The event will feature a 4-person scramble 18-hole golf tournament, along with raffles, games, and prizes. Sidekicks of West Michigan is an organization that strives to help individuals with and without disabilities to gain independence and build friendships through inclusive adventures in West Michigan. So come out and support a great cause while enjoying a day of golf and fun activities for a wonderful organization. I won’t be able to attend this year due to a scheduling conflict but highly recommend it. Register for it here.

B&N Sandwiches Opens In Holland

B&N Sandwiches opened in Holland Township after eight months of signage being posted at their location on 1011 136th Ave. The soft opening began on Friday, June 14. The restaurant is owned by Binh Nguyen and Nhung Le, with Vi Nguyen stating that they decided to open a second location in Holland due to the high volume of local customers traveling to their Grand Rapids restaurant. The Holland location offers a larger menu including sandwiches, egg rolls, noodle soup, rice dishes, and pho, as well as expanded drink options such as boba milk tea and fruit teas. The restaurant is located in the former spot of Don Miguel Restaurant, which moved to 264 N. River Ave in 2021.
