Local Fruit Farm Guide For Strawberry Season 🍓

It's finally strawberry picking time again, whether you're with family or friends. This month, Michiganders will be raiding nearby farms to gather a basket full of the sweetest berries. In certain locations, the season for picking strawberries is from early to mid-June to early July; however, the length of the season can vary based on the type of berries planted and the weather. In West Michigan, the season has begun early this year. Fruit farms in the Grand Rapids and Muskegon areas are harvesting ripe strawberries. More info on local fruit farms here.

Search And Rescue At Pere Marquette Beach

A search was conducted at Pere Marquette Beach in Muskegon, Michigan on Saturday after reports of a struggling swimmer near the pier. The man slipped below the surface before authorities arrived. Multiple agencies, including the US Coast Guard, participated in the search, which transitioned from rescue to recovery. As of 7:30pm, no body had been found and no one had been reported missing.

Grand Rapids Soccer Stadium ⚽️

The West Michigan Sports Commission (WMSC) is partnering with ASM Global to handle the booking policy of the proposed 8,500-seat soccer stadium in downtown Grand Rapids. In a resolution approved by the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority (CAA), WMSC will book events at the venue when it's not being used for professional soccer matches, such as regional and national soccer tournaments and other field sports. The stadium is planned to be built near Lake Michigan Drive and Winter Avenue downtown, close to the former site of the Big Boy restaurant. The project, expected to cost up to $175 million, will be funded by $115 million in public money and $60 million from the private sector. Kent County voters will vote on a proposal to raise the county's lodging tax on hotel stays from 5% to 8%, which will help fund the stadium along with a new amphitheater and a possible aquarium. Planners estimate the stadium could bring an economic impact of over $400 million to the city, with the first game scheduled for the spring of 2026. More info can be seen here.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Public Restaurant To Return To Zeeland

After a two-year hiatus, Public Restaurant in Zeeland is set to reopen on Main Avenue on June 25. The closure was caused by Moxy Dental's desire to expand in the building, prompting a new development project. Despite the challenges, owner Lucas Grill is thrilled to bring back Public as part of his 1983 Restaurants company. The menu has been refined, but many favorites will still be offered. The majority of the staff are familiar faces, showing the community's support during the closure. Grill views the experience as a chance for growth and improvement, grateful for the patience and backing of loyal customers.
