THE DIGEST

Sinking Sailboat Rescue ⛵️

za

A man was saved just in time on Memorial Day when his sailboat started to sink in Lake Michigan, according to officials in Grand Haven, MI. The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City carried out the daring rescue on Monday, May 27, around 25 miles off the coast of Grand Haven. "Looking for heroes on the water?!," Marine officials said in response to the valiant deed. They are with us!" officials wrote on the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan Facebook page. The man was rescued just moments before his sailboat disappeared into the depths of 300 feet of water, officials confirmed.

The Woods In Fennville ⛺️

Secluded and situated on 45 acres in Fennville, Allegan County, Michigan, The Woods Luxury Camping is a short distance from Lake Michigan. Owner Jacqueline Petro oversees the property, which has 15 opulent cabins with features like air conditioning, fire pits, and hammocks. The campground has shared restrooms and a canteen with baked goods, coffee, and s'mores. The purpose of the cabins is to offer a peaceful and secluded stay in the forest. There are trails on the property that lead to woods and sand dunes. After 10 p.m., the area is quiet, and no more visitors are permitted. Wineries and breweries in Saugatuck and Fennville are nearby attractions. More info and booking details can be found here.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Grand Valley Tutoring Service To Become Standalone Nonprofit

A tutoring service at Grand Valley State University is now a separate nonprofit called EQPD. It will provide tutoring, professional development, and community-service program management nationally. The organization offers three services - EQPD K-12 Connect, EQPD to Grow, and EQPD Next. EQPD K-12 Connect provides tutoring to schools, EQPD to Grow offers tutoring and mentoring to children, and EQPD Next works with colleges for the Federal Work-Study Program. Launched in 2020, EQPD aims to serve more students and schools despite becoming independent from GVSU.

Seniors Helping Seniors

Seniors Helping Seniors is a new in-home services company in Ottawa County and Allegan County, founded over two decades ago, offering companionship and assistance to seniors by employing active seniors as caregivers. The service was brought to the lakeshore by Brian and Mollie Gaggin, who aim to address the challenge of loneliness among seniors through personalized care. Inspired by his mother's experience with Alzheimer's, Brian wants to help seniors stay in their homes and remain independent. The service also provides employment opportunities and competitive pay for caregivers. The Gaggins find their work emotionally rewarding and fulfilling.

Muskegon Positive Energy Campaign

As part of its positive energy campaign, the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce is recognizing five companies that have reached significant milestones this National Tourism Week. At the Muskegon County Convention and Visitor's Bureau's Business After Hours event, certificates of recognition will be given out. SS Milwaukee Clipper Preservation Inc. (120 years), Parties in the Park (40 years), West Michigan Dock & Market Corp. (90 years), and The Lewis House Bed & Breakfast (10 years) are the companies receiving recognition. Jonathan Wilson, the chair of the Chamber Board, came up with the concept of celebrating milestones to uplift the local spirit and assist enduringly prosperous companies along the Muskegon Lakeshore.
