THE DIGEST
Muskegon’s New Logo

The city of Muskegon has approved a new visual logo and brand, created by Kindred Marketing. The logo features a geometrical letter M with various symbols representing different aspects of the community. The design is meant to be simple and timeless, with the possibility of rotating symbols over time. Community engagement was a key part of the process, with input gathered from residents, city officials, and various groups. The new branding will be rolled out soon, replacing the previous logo on various city materials. The city paid $50,000 for the branding work 💵
Macatawa Water Festival
The Macatawa Water Festival hosted by ODC Network and Windmill Island Gardens will take place on July 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature over 20 community partners offering activities such as kayaking, rain barrel workshops, a children’s bike course, live animals, games, and art activities. Attendees can learn about the watershed and ways to enhance and protect it. Various water-related activities and educational experiences will be available for all ages, including creating “franken-bugs”, a water-cycle watercolor craft, learning about lake sturgeon, filtering water, viewing a historic canoe replica, smart water use demonstrations, kayaking, and bike skills workshops. Three rain barrel workshops will also be held at different times throughout the event, with registration required beforehand.
Grants For Michigan Urban Forests

Bare's organization and cities across Michigan are working together to plant thousands of shade-giving trees and train residents to care for them. This effort is fueled by federal funding aimed at enhancing and protecting urban forests, including trees that line streets and fill parks. The $1.5 billion from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act presents a unique opportunity to increase tree canopy in areas lacking coverage, providing benefits to communities while addressing climate change. Michigan is receiving $40.4 million, with most going to communities through the U.S. Forest Service and additional support for the DNR's Urban and Community Forestry program. This funding surpasses the previous annual urban forestry budget for the entire nation and offers hope for improving living conditions in neighborhoods facing polluted air and extreme temperatures, major contributors to weather-related deaths nationwide. I’m all for adding more trees 🙋♂️
LOCAL BUSINESS
Grand Haven Vous Cafe To Open Today
The Vous Cafe will be located in the Momentum Center in Grand Haven and run by the US Cafe in Muskegon Heights. The inaugural event, "The First Meal Fundraiser," will be held on July 11 at 6:30 p.m. featuring a tasting menu of Cajun seafood dishes and J-Dubs wine. Reservations for this exclusive event can be made for $200 per seating. The cafe aims to offer job skills training and employment opportunities for individuals facing barriers to employment, as well as provide cooking classes for the community. The project is generously supported by Jeanine Taghon-Oleszczuk and Greg Oleszczuk in honor of Alice Seaver. Following the fundraiser, The Vous Cafe will officially open on July 12, serving breakfast and Cajun cuisine from Tuesdays to Saturdays. With construction led by Westwind Construction, the cafe is part of the Building Momentum Capital Campaign and needs only $106,000 to reach its goal. Donations can be made online or in person at the Momentum Center.
Saugatuck votes in favor of 20% cap on STRs
At a Saugatuck City Council meeting on July 8, a 20% cap on short-term rentals in R-1 Residential Districts was debated. The cap was approved in a 4-2 vote, with Russ Gardner and Gregory Muncey dissenting. Logan White recused himself due to a conflict of interest. Community Planner David Jirousek's data showed that 37% of homes in the R-1 district are STRs. The approved cap will limit the districts to 20% STRs, with grandfathering for existing licenses and a lottery system for new ones. Some residents expressed concerns about the impact of STRs on the community, while others supported them. Parks Township is also facing similar issues with STR regulations, with a lawsuit filed against a ban on rentals in residential zones.
