THE DIGEST

Michigan 2025 Fishing Regulations Changes

As Michigan's peak fishing season approaches, anglers should note important regulation changes effective April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026. Key updates include modified steelhead size limits and new gear restrictions on specific waters.

Significant changes involve inland stream rainbow trout (steelhead): some Type 3 and Type 4 streams no longer enforce a 20-inch minimum size limit, with a daily possession limit of one. Additionally, from November 1-30, new single-pointed hook regulations apply in Grand Haven, Muskegon, and Whitehall/Montague, alongside a prohibition on spearing or possessing spearing gear. Muskellunge regulations have also changed, with a new 50-inch minimum size limit in Thornapple Lake and Lake Hudson to support Great Lakes-strain population development. Various minor updates affecting northern pike, bass, and trout regulations are also in place. Anglers are encouraged to review the 2025 Michigan Fishing Regulations for detailed information on these changes.

Two Iconic Michigan Lighthouses Plan Restorations

Restoration efforts are set to begin for two historic lighthouses on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, thanks to a combined $106,000 in matching grants from the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program. The Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse and Gull Rock Lighthouse will undergo crucial renovations, including roof restoration, cleaning, and historically accurate door installations.

Funded by the sale of specialty Save Our Lights license plates, these grants aim to preserve Michigan's maritime heritage. The Gull Rock Lighthouse, built in 1867 and still an active navigational aid, will receive nearly $46,500 for restoration, while the Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse, established in 1948, will benefit from a $60,000 grant. The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office emphasizes the importance of these projects in maintaining the state's iconic lighthouses, which serve as vital tourist attractions and symbols of Michigan's rich history along the Great Lakes.

5 Major Ottawa County Developments Planned

New developments along West Michigan's lakeshore are set to enhance the area's recreational offerings and housing options. Key proposals in Ottawa County include:

Holland Bike Park: Planned for 97 N. River Ave., this bike park will feature a plaza, bike repair station, and 600 feet of pump tracks, with construction expected to start in spring 2026.

ODC Network Nature Center: A new 4,400-square-foot facility is proposed at Hudsonville Nature Center to support nature-based education for children and community programs.

Waterfront Park: Proposed in Spring Lake Township, this park will include parking, a pavilion, bike storage, and a lakefront walk with a fishing deck.

Hidden Shores West: The final phase of a condo development in Allendale Township will add 49 units, featuring walking trails and waterfront access.

Folds of Honor Bed and Breakfast: Located at American Dunes Golf Club, this 12,143-square-foot B&B will support the Folds of Honor Foundation, providing scholarships for military families.

Dockers Fish House Under New Ownership

Dockers Fish House, a cherished West Michigan waterfront restaurant, will reopen as BoDocks Marina Bar & Grill in spring 2026 under new ownership by Harris Hospitality. Co-owner Fred Scharmer announced the name change and renovation plans aimed at attracting families, boaters, and tourists. BoDocks will feature a beachy atmosphere, a pergola roof, and garage doors for an open feel. The restaurant aims to be more family-friendly with lower prices and increased docking space for boats. Scharmer emphasizes that BoDocks will offer a quieter dining experience compared to its sister establishment, The Deck, enhancing the overall dining experience.

New York Fried Chicken Coming To Holland Township

A new fried chicken restaurant, New York Fried Chicken, is set to open in Holland Township at the former Taco Fiesta location on Lakewood Boulevard. The Sentinel confirmed the news on March 24, following a property purchase by Aaryan Real Estate, LLC on December 20, 2024. Sukhwinder Singh, the resident agent, is also linked to NYFC Holdings, which owns another New York Fried Chicken location in Kent County. The restaurant will offer a diverse menu, including fried chicken, shrimp, burgers, and more.
