THE DIGEST
Magnet Fishing In The Grand River 🎣

Along the Grand River in western Michigan, Xan Dulyea-Lowing and his father are passionate about recovering misplaced treasures through magnet fishing. A live bazooka rocket, antique weapons, and a stolen motorcycle are just a few of the many things they have discovered. In 2023, they found over 200 electric scooters in the Red Cedar River and successfully recovered a stolen Honda CL175 motorcycle. The two have made thousands of dollars selling scrap metal, and they always call the police first when they come across anything that might be dangerous. With little gear and few limitations, they can clean up bodies of water and find hidden gems by engaging in the hobby of magnet fishing. More info on it here. This is my new favorite type of fishing!
Emerson The Brave Cancer Walkathon 💪
A walkathon is being held by West Ottawa Public Schools to raise funds for 12-year-old Emerson Hoogendoorn, a student at Harbor Lights Middle School, who is battling brain cancer. The fundraiser will take place on Tuesday, June 4 from 6-8 p.m. at the middle school stadium track. Participants are encouraged to walk or run six laps to represent each year Hoogendoorn has been fighting cancer, with a suggested donation of $10. Funds raised will help purchase a recumbent bike to aid in Hoogendoorn's strength building and potentially fund a trip to Disney World for her and her family. Live music, food trucks, and other activities will be available at the event. Hoogendoorn was diagnosed with diffuse midline glioma in 2018 and has since been receiving treatment. More information can be found on the "Emerson the Brave" Facebook page and donations can be made through the family's GoFundMe page.

Daytime Meteor Showers 💫
The Daytime Arietids meteor shower will reach its annual peak this week, with the best chance to see meteors just before dawn. The shower runs from May 29 to June 17, peaking on the morning of June 4. The moon will be close to its new phase, providing ideal viewing conditions. Look eastward in the hour before dawn to potentially see meteors streaking across the sky. Peak rates may reach up to 200 meteors per hour, but visible rates during the pre-dawn viewing window could be as low as one per hour. For the best viewing, choose a location with minimal light pollution, clear skies, and a view of the horizon. The next significant meteor shower for North American viewers is the Perseids in August.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Smoothie King To Open 6 Locations
Six Smoothie King locations are set to open in West Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Wyoming, Holland, Grand Haven, and Muskegon. Franchiser OM Group will be opening the locations early next year. Smoothie King got its start in 1973 and currently has over 1,200 locations globally. They have a goal of opening 100 new stores this year, following a 'Clean Blends Promise.'
Michigan’s Smallest Bar Taps Out
The owner of Peoples Cider Company Muskegon announced on Facebook that the bar, known as "Michigan's smallest," will not reopen this summer in Muskegon's Chalet business district. The decision was made after they were unable to reach a lease agreement with the City of Muskegon. The bar had three seats and a maximum capacity of seven people, including employees. It was open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during the summer months, and on Saturdays in October. The company, known for making hard cider and operating a tap room in Grand Rapids, is now searching for a new lakeshore location for next summer.
Hamburger Mikey To Open In Spring Lake
This summer, Tim Taylor, the proprietor of the Muskegon restaurant Hamburger Mikey, intends to open a second location in Spring Lake. The Small Town Sandwich Shop and Beefy's Burger Shack used to occupy the same building as the new location. According to Taylor, Hamburger Mikey is a "fast casual" eatery that is well-known for its delicious patties and fries that have won awards. After making some exterior and interior building improvements, the new location is expected to open in July. Taylor expressed her excitement about joining the Tri-Cities community and contributing to the Grand Haven and Spring Lake culinary scenes. I’m going to miss Beefy’s but ready to give this one a try!
