THE DIGEST
6 of the 9 Most Adorable Great Lakes Small Towns Are Found in Michigan

Michigan is highlighted in a recent World Atlas article that recognizes six of its towns among the top nine Most Adorable Small Towns in the Great Lakes. Traverse City, noted for its blend of small-town charm and urban glamor, boasts over 130 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Mackinaw City features Headlands International Dark Sky Park and nearby Mackinac Island. Petoskey is celebrated for its sunsets and the picturesque Gaslight District. Marquette offers outdoor attractions like Hogback Mountain and Presque Isle Park. The list also acknowledges Munising's scenic Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and concludes with Ludington, known for Ludington State Park and its beaches. The recognition showcases Michigan's diverse small towns, emphasizing their charm and recreational opportunities. More info here.
Consumers Energy Offers Tours Of Power Plant
Consumers Energy is offering public tours of the J.H. Campbell Complex in Ottawa County, MI, before its decommissioning in September, marking the closure of Michigan's last coal-fired power plant. The bus tours will take place on September 21 and require advance registration. The plant, operational since 1962, contributed nearly 7.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2022, ranking as the second-largest greenhouse gas emitter in the state. Consumers Energy plans to retire Campbell by June 1, 2025, while expanding solar power and battery storage. The decision to close has faced local opposition over energy security concerns and the desire for a community-owned cooperative. Consumers will provide job opportunities for current employees and is working with local leaders on economic redevelopment plans for the 2,000-acre site, which is vital for local tax revenue. Here’s the sign up link if you plan on touring.
Burning Foot Beer Festival Returns

The 9th Annual Burning Foot Beer Festival will take place on August 24, 2024, at Pere Marquette Beach in Muskegon, Michigan. Attendees can sample craft beers from the Great Lakes region, enjoy local art and food, listen to live music from various artists, and appreciate the scenic views of Lake Michigan. The event is organized in collaboration with the Lakeshore Brewers Guild. More about the event can be found here.
LOCAL BUSINESS
Muskegon Food Hall Adding New Tenants Before Grand Opening
Developer Troy Wasserman's $8 million project at 221 W Webster Ave, the former Lumberman’s Bank, aims to open Lumberman’s Vault food hall by October, pending city approval. The development will host tenant businesses, including Soul Filled, Casa Casos, and Up Leaf Café. The food hall will feature a shared seating area with a bar and outdoor seating. The building includes office spaces, with Core Realty Partners already operating. The basement will be a meeting room and gym. The renovation revitalizes a vacant site since 2010 and preserves the bank's historical elements.
Holland Paisley Pig To Change Name
The Paisley Pig in Holland will rebrand as Tell-Tales Trattoria after an ownership change, with its final day as the Paisley Pig on August 24. The restaurant announced plans for a transformation on social media, promising details about the grand opening soon. The Grand Haven Paisley Pig is under separate ownership and will remain open. The gastropub is known for dishes like pulled pork nachos, cheese curds, and artisan pizzas. Details about the new menu at Tell-Tales have not yet been revealed.
