THE DIGEST
Largest Ski Jump In Western Hemisphere

Construction is beginning on a project to revitalize Copper Peak, the largest ski jump in the Western Hemisphere, located north of Ironwood, Michigan. The first phase involves reshaping the landing hill and installing a concrete slab with stairs on either side. Copper Peak aims to be the only ski flying hill outside of Europe and the first in the world with an all-season surface for international competitions. Built in 1969, Copper Peak has been largely unused due to financial issues but discussions to reopen began over a decade ago. In 2022, Michigan allocated $20 million for renovations. The project has faced delays due to rising costs and supply chain issues. Although organizers continue to raise funds, they estimate the jump could open in two to three years, potentially generating tens of millions in annual economic impact for the region. ECI Construction will manage the initial phase of the work.
Waterspouts This Weekend
Waterspouts are expected to form over the Great Lakes this weekend, a common occurrence in September when warm lake water meets cooler air aloft. Ideal conditions include a cool air blast from the northwest, a cold front, and an upper-level low-pressure system, all of which create instability. The temperature difference between the warm surface water and colder air above causes air movement, which can lead to rotation and the formation of waterspouts. The weekend's weather pattern will be particularly favorable for waterspouts, as radar can help locate them near vigorous rain showers or thunderstorms. It’s advised to stay in vehicles and maintain a safe distance due to the potential for severe winds and lightning associated with waterspouts.
