THE DIGEST
Trout, Walleye, And Pike Fishing Seasons Kick Off This Weekend

This weekend marks the start of several fishing seasons in Michigan, including the much-anticipated statewide trout season. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources encourages anglers to prepare their gear and fishing licenses and to invite friends or newcomers to join in the excitement. The statewide trout season, along with Lower Peninsula walleye and northern pike seasons, opens on Saturday, April 26. Meanwhile, the Upper Peninsula walleye and northern pike seasons will begin on May 15.Anglers should be cautious of potential obstructions in roadways and waterways due to damage from a late March ice storm affecting several northern Lower Peninsula counties. Additionally, it's crucial to prevent the spread of invasive species, such as didymo (rock snot) and New Zealand mudsnail, by cleaning fishing gear before moving between different water bodies. For more information on regulations, licenses, and fishing updates, visit Michigan.gov/Fishing.
Smiley Face Moon
On April 25, two bright planets, Venus and Saturn, will appear as the "eyes" of a smiley face, with a crescent moon as the grin in the pre-dawn sky. However, skywatching experts warn that it won’t resemble a classic smiley face as depicted online.Instead, NASA indicates that on April 24 and 25, Venus, Saturn, and the crescent moon will be visible low in the eastern sky. Those with a clear horizon may also spot Mercury. EarthSky clarifies that while there will be a crescent moon and two bright planets, the actual view will differ from the dramatic images circulating online, as the planets have varying brightness and the smiley face will be oriented sideways. Expect a unique sight, but keep your expectations grounded!
Frost And When To Plant

A useful climate tool helps determine the average last frost date for your county, which is especially important in Michigan's variable weather. Southern Michigan tends to warm up earlier than central areas, affecting the growing season. The official frost temperature is 35 degrees, measured six feet above ground, but local conditions can differ significantly. While 35 degrees may not kill established plants, tender seedlings like tomatoes, peppers, and squash are vulnerable to light frost in some regions, waiting until Memorial Day for planting can be too late. The average last frost date indicates that 50% of frosts occur after this date, so for greater safety, consider the 90% date. For example, Washtenaw County and Ann Arbor have an earlier frost date, while Grand Rapids averages around May 15. Shoreline cities may see the last frost by May 10, whereas Big Rapids should plan for May 22. Always check forecasts closely after the expected frost-free date.

Bourbon Barn To Open On The Lakeshore
Round Barn Winery and Estate has revitalized its original red barn, transforming it into the "Bourbon Barn Cocktail Lounge" at 10983 Hills Road, Baroda. This space focuses on handcrafted cocktails and small-batch spirits. Due to declining alcohol sales during the COVID-19 pandemic, the winery pivoted to meet rising demand for its distillery products. The Bourbon Barn, which opened in February, hosts regular events like Bourbon and Cigar Thursdays and Old Fashioned Fridays, featuring unique cocktails. New spirits, including a maple bourbon, have been introduced, with more set to launch in May or June. After Memorial Day, the Bourbon Barn will operate weekends.
